Tyler and Pete, his dog, were covered with mud from head to toe after playing with his soccer ball. It would be easy for them to clean up (maybe not Pete), but Tyler know that "cleaning up the Earth isn't so easy." When he looked around him he could easily see how the Earth was becoming polluted. In school he was learning about "some [of the] things people do make the Earth's land, air, and water dirty." Just looking at the polluted water coming out of a culvert was totally yucky! Looking at the smog overhead was no better. Tyler was going to have to learn to save power if he wanted to help stop pollution. Do you think you could be "A Super Power Saver" too?
Tyler's teacher was helping her students learn to save power by doing some simple things like turning off a light when they left a room. Another suggestion was turning off the computer when they were through using it. Three other important ways to reduce pollution and save power is to remember the three Rs "reduce, reuse, and recycle." Tyler challenges the reader to help reduce pollution and explains all of these terms for him or her and suggests things that will help. You'll learn about the importance of riding a bike to do errands when you can, planting trees, donating items to Goodwill, and you'll see many other things you can do to help stop pollution and save the planet.
This is an excellent book that will teach the young student to become a "planet protector." We follow Tyler throughout this beginning chapter book as he tells us how he is learning to protect the environment. The book and artwork are simple, yet have a powerful green message to impart to students. There are several informative circular sidebars scattered throughout the book. For example, one says "coal is a black or dark brown rock that people dig up. We often burn coal to make power. This makes the air dirty. We can get cleaner power from wind, water, or the sun." In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a Follow the Pollution Path Activity, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This is one in the Cloverleaf Books series, "Planet Protectors" that would be an excellent addition to any homeschool or classroom library.
