This is a fabulous book about the Gullah culture and food. It's a journey through a different time with the bonus of sharing recipes that were part of that time. It was so heartwarming you just wanted to jump into the author's childhood and experience the family life they had growing up. I have tried some of the recipes and they are pretty darn tasty also! Too bad this is out of print and hard to find!

Gullah Cuisine By Land and By Sea is a magnificent book. Not just a cookbook, it informs and inspires. I believe that if each of us sat down with someone from a different culture, someone who lived in a different state or county, someone who grew up differently from us, someone who perhaps grew up in just another part of town, we could start a conversation that would we’d come away from so enriched and enlightened that we’d see that people are all the same, they simply have different but similar ways. I’ve traveled the world, and I am continually struck with the notion that within those houses I see before me, there are people living out their lives much in the same way I live mine although perhaps eating different foods, listening to different music, and wearing differently-styled clothes. This wonderful book makes that point. Narrator William Baldwin, Chef Charlotte Jenkins, and her husband Frank Jenkins bring to life the Gullah culture of the Carolina Low Country. We experience the “growing up” of Frank and Charlotte, seeing their lives, their families, their neighbors, and their customs. My childhood took place at the same time theirs did, but our lives were worlds apart. Yet, the love we all got from our families was the same. This is history telling and family lessoning at its best! The first half of this gorgeous book covers all that, and it must be read. Do not—I repeat—do not dismiss this as simply a cookbook. I said it is a gorgeous book for it is illustrated not only with vintage photographs, but these are supplemented by full-color photos by Mic Smith which chronicle Jenkins family celebrations. And these pics are joyous! An added treat is that peppered throughout the book are the paintings of Jonathon Green, beloved Gullah painter. As stated on the jacket flap, author Pat Conroy says the Gullah people in Green’s paintings look like “they got dressed while staring at rainbows.” Frankly, I purchased this book while on vacation in Charleston simply for Green’s paintings. I could never afford even the prints of his works that I found there, but I could have a treasure trove of his paintings by purchasing this book. What I found after I started exploring the book is that Gullah Cuisine By Land and By Sea is a treasure trove of more than Green’s paintings, for it brings to life the Gullah culture—those folks of the Carolina Low Country descended from African plantation slaves—and it gives us a myriad of Gullah recipes from the kitchen of Charlotte Jenkins, chef of her own restaurant A Taste of Gullah Cuisine in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Oh, how I wish I’d perused the book more before my vacation in Charleston was over. I regret that I knew nothing of her restaurant. I would love to have eaten her cuisine. But now, at least, I have her recipes to recreate what she serves.
Gullah Cuisine By Land and by Sea is a very good representation of the Gullah people, their history and their foods. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the heritage of the coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina.
This is a beautiful book with wonderful art and easy to follow delicious recipes. Everyone I have given the book as gifts has reordered more to share with their children. Great way to start a tradition

Just got it today. Came very fast. I've been to her restaurant and it was one of my favorites. However, now it's closed because she is catering. So I bought the book and will have to make her delicious dishes myself. Can't wait to get started. All of my favorite dishes are in the book! Great history of Gullah, too, in the first part of the book. Very nice!
